MIKE'S NEW CAR ANALYSIS

The setting of this short film is outside the residence of Monsters Inc. protagonists, Mike and Sully. Sully is lead outside with his hand over his eyes while the camera remains fixed on a close shot of him. The director chose this so that both Sully and the audience cannot see where he is being lead. A point of view shot from Sully's angle reveals that Mike is showing off his brand new car that is parked neatly in the centre of the screen. The high angled shot shows the scale of Mike and him next to the car presents the comedic values of how short he actually is. The camera is then placed on the end of the bonnet looking inwards to show a two shot of both characters in the car. The music is very idle and suits the comedic yet relaxed mood of the film. The setting is presented at sundown which also indicates the mellow and relaxed tone of the characters.
The camera shows both characters in shot as Sully panics and Mike screeches in pain to give an atmosphere of commotion.
A close up shot is used here as Sully answers the phone. The fact that Mike isn't in shot suggests that he is irrelevant but the comedy comes in swiftly as Mike screams down the phone.
Sound returns to normal and as does the atmosphere as Mike dismounts from the car.
A high angled shot from the corner of the street shows how ridiculous the characters' situation looks from a distance as the sound is quieter.
Suggestive comedy is used here as a shot of Sully from across the street is used as Mike drives away. A loud crash is heard and his tires roll past. The director shows this in this way to add how Mike can't drive his car effectively. The movie then closes with a shot of Mike saying that he misses his old car.

After a comedic scene of Sully playing with the multidirectional chair functionality, Mike is booted out of the car and an over the shoulder shot from behind Sully is shown and the audience can get a perspective of Mike's size as he jumps up to look through the car window. This presents the running joke of Mike being too small for the car.
A shot of the car controls would be funny to the audience as the sheer stupidity of how many buttons would both entertain and let the reader know how confused Sully must be.
As he opens the bonnet, the mechanisms churn at an alarming volume which would be unexpected to the audience. This adds to its comedic value. Mike then makes his way round to the front of the car and the camera shot once again shows how short he is as he cannot close the car's bonnet.
