Credit Sequence Analysis
Shaun of the Dead
The music in the background juxtaposes the title of the film as it is quite jolly and is played over an obvious zombie film. This presents the film's genre of a horror-comedy. The music sounds like it is played over an intercom in a shop and there are no accompanying noises that would be heard in a shop. This suggests that there will be a point in the movie where the local environment will become baron and without life. Further supporting the zombie aesthetic.
The setting at 0:04 to 0:15 is an everyday supermarket which shows how the film will tackle the events of everyday people. The audience will find this humorous as it is very relatable for the working class person.
0:22 presents a comedic scene of a street gang walking in unison while they nod their heads. The title of the film is placed on the floor in front of them. The title itself is in a ripped up font that is associated with an apocalyptic setting that the film has obviously advertised.
More key settings are presented throughout that the audience will be paying attention to.
Zombie imagery not only foreshadows the events in the movie but it also reveals the main character, Shaun (Simon Pegg).
Music merges with the on screen sound for a comedic scene between the two characters. The music then rises back in volume to close the sequence.
Casino Royale
The sequence opens with the trademark transition of the gun barrel that is custom to the James Bond franchise. This confirms that the film will stay true to its roots.
The fonts used are very sleek, formal and thin, symbolising the reform that the MI6, and therefore James Bond, stick to.
Throughout the sequence, a lot of playing card symbols are used in many different ways. We can see the depiction of Daniel Craig load a spade into his gun before firing it. This connotes that not only will playing cards be a crucial plot point, but will decide someone's fate.
The titles are aesthetically pleasing and symmetrical to give a very organised atmosphere. One that you may find in a casino which, made obvious from the title, will be a key location in the movie.
Multiple red figure are being fought off by a black depiction of, what we can assume to be, an agent. The use of the colour red shows that they are clearly antagonising the man in black.
At exactly 1:42, the face of a queen, featured on a playing card setting, changes to be that of an actual woman. Not only does this show that this woman will be a key character but the fact she's been given the position of queen shows that she is quite powerful and could make a crucial decision.
Predator
The entire sequence is shot in an infrared filter to represent how the main antagonist sees. As the sequence presents the movie's characters it is almost like the audience is taking the place of the alien hunter. The characters are all looking around throughout to tell the audience that they are being followed/hunted. The blue filter to the sequence sets up a view of how we, as an audience, can expect to see through.
Arnold Schwarzenegger would have been the main selling point of this movie because at the time (the 1980s) he was seen as Hollywood’s action hero. He is seen running with his gun and looking behind the camera to present him as domineering, portraying him as a classic marine hero.
The title shines against the background with a loud music blare.
Towards the end, the top of a 7 of hearts is shot twice. This represents James Bonds' well known agent number '007'. Also, the fact that the card is of the heart suit, connotes to us that 007 is the main protagonist and 'the hero' of the film. A heart is also representative of human life source and is as if the card represents Bond himself.
